Home Remodeling Contractor Serving Washington, DC

Washington DC renovation is a different world from the Maryland suburbs. The District is defined by attached rowhouses — many over 100 years old — in neighborhoods like Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Petworth, and Columbia Heights. These homes come with party walls, narrow lots, and frequently sit inside historic districts with strict design rules.

Build Dog Construction is licensed to work in DC (separate from our Maryland MHIC #157062) and understands the city's distinct permitting and rowhouse construction challenges. From gutting a Petworth kitchen to finishing an English basement for rental, we deliver work that meets DC code. Call (240) 387-8186.

DC Permits & DOB Requirements

DC requires its own contractor licensing, separate from Maryland's MHIC — Build Dog Construction holds both. Permits in the District are issued by the Department of Buildings (DOB, formerly DCRA), and structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work each require their own permit and inspection.

Expect a DC labor premium of roughly 15–20% over Maryland due to tighter access, parking and dumpster permits, and more complex logistics on attached lots. We build that reality into your estimate up front so there are no surprises.

Rowhouses, Party Walls & Historic Districts

Most DC rowhouses share structural party walls with neighbors. Any work that touches a shared wall may require a party wall agreement, and we coordinate with adjoining owners and engineers when load paths are affected.

If your home sits in a historic district like Georgetown or Capitol Hill, exterior changes must be approved by the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB). We prepare the documentation and design our work to preserve the historic character while modernizing the interior.
